A student or group of students may propose an independent project or experience that considers one or more specific interactions between science/technology and contemporary society. The student(s) are responsible for finding a faculty member to supervise and grade their work. In order to get credit for a student initiated Integrative Experience, you must submit a completed and signed paper version of this form or have your faculty advisor email a completed version of the form to Eric_Ditwiler@HMC.edu prior to the close of business on the first day of the semester that you want to register for the IE.

There should be demonstrable evidence of significant critical engagement of theory to the interactions listed above. Students should examine the underlying assumptions of any theories utilized.

The project should enable the synthesis of alternative perspectives and the prioritization of disparate goals or the weighing of competing values. Students should identify underlying values--both their own and those of others considered in their analysis.

The project should allow opportunities for self-reflection about the student's role or potential role in the interaction(s) listed above. This self-reflection may be addressed in the oral presentation of the work in a forum that allows discussion of the work in a community setting.
While not required for an Integrative Experience, where appropriate, students should engage in meaningful group work and interdisciplinary thinking involving technical fields. Students may also engage in service-oriented outreach activities.
